Description
Big brothers big sisters of southwest louisiana's foster grandparent program will have an estimated 64 foster grandparent volunteers who will serve children in 21 stations in calcasieu, acadia, vernon and jeff davis parishes. The foster grandparent volunteers will work at least 30 minutes per day, per designated subject (reading and math), per assigned student. The primary focus area of this project is K-12 success and school readiness. At the end of the three-year grant, the anticipated outcome is that students will score at average or above average on benchmark testing in math and reading. The FGP program will focus on 3 outcome areas: 1. Assist students in K-12 in improving their reading skills and math skills to help them reach grade level by grade three, increasing leap, ileap, and benchmark scores to basic or above basic. 2. Assist students who are in grades K-12 who have little to no assistance at home with homework in improving their math and reading skills to help them reach grade level in these subjects by grade three, increasing leap, ileap and bench mark test scores to basic or above basic. 3. Assist head start children in cognitive abilities in early literacy and math skills prior to entering kindergarten. Data will be collected from the stations reported by teachers and/or supervisors twice during the school year. Teachers will document child participation in FGP program activities as shown on the classroom attendance log/teacher survey. Data collection will be included on a spread sheet separated by station and FGP program which will be updated in january and again in may with information collected from benchmark scores and/or standardized tests. Data will then be totaled and reported. Expected results include gains in school readiness, improved academic performance and academic engagement. The cncs federal investment would be $ 310,813.
