Project Grant 20266701346809
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded $730,000 to Boyce Thompson Institute For Plant Research Inc. on April 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) to fund an education and outreach program in agricultural biotechnology for middle and high school students in underserved rural communities in upstate New York. The program recruits 100 students annually to grow and evaluate transgenic high-anthocyanin purple tomatoes in...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research Inc. $180,000 on May 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) Program (CFDA 10.310) to investigate the molecular basis of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal accommodation by host plants, with focus on understanding how kinase CS proteins enable the symbiotic relationship between certain fungi and crop species. The project examines mechanisms by which...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded New Mexico State University $759,000 on April 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to develop mechanically harvestable, Phytophthora capsici–resistant New Mexico type chile cultivars and to establish a cross-institutional graduate student exchange program. New Mexico State University and Cornell University will combine resources from their chile breeding programs to...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. received a $490,000 project grant awarded on August 1, 2025, by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310). The four-year project, scheduled for completion on July 31, 2029, focuses on developing insect pest resistance in commercial peanut cultivars to address significant profit losses experienced by southeastern peanut growers...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Boyce Thompson Institute For Plant Research Inc. $625,717 on March 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program to investigate genetic mechanisms regulating corn plant height and to identify breeding opportunities for short-stature, lodging-resistant corn varieties suitable for U.S. farming. The research focuses on corn genes initially thought to regulate plant defense against insects...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Arizona State University $650,000 on March 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), CFDA 10.310, to develop integrated bioprocesses for producing acrylates from waste biomass. The project will engineer novel biorefineries that convert biomass-derived lactic and malic acid intermediates to acrylic, maleic, and fumaric acid esters, using agricultural waste biomass as fermentation...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Georgia TECH Research Corp one million dollars on August 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) to develop a biodegradable fertilizer coating derived entirely from biomass waste. The project creates a non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) coating synthesized from farm waste including corn stalks, peanut shells, and sawdust. The NIPU is combined with clay to form a thin, biodegradable...
- This $299,999 Project Grant was awarded on May 1, 2025 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310). The grant aims to identify potent antagonistic compounds and their inhibition mechanisms against Pythium ultimum, the causal agent of root rot in corn. The research will support the development of biocontrol agents and biopesticides, which will be tested in subsequent field...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Purdue University $849,027 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on January 1, 2026, to investigate how domestication has altered plant-insect-microbiome interactions and whether wild-crop grafting can restore pest defense and beneficial microbial partnerships in crops. The research uses tomato as a model system and employs reciprocal grafting designs combining greenhouse and field experiments...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of California, Berkeley $370,152.01 on July 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) Foundational and Applied Science Program (CFDA 10.310) to elucidate the molecular mechanism of CMD2-type resistance to cassava mosaic disease and related geminivirus diseases, test whether this resistance mechanism functions across multiple crop species including tomato, cotton, and corn, and...
The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded $650,000 to the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research Inc. on September 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to expand public guayule germplasm and develop genomic resources for natural rubber breeding. The recipient will incorporate formerly private high-yielding guayule accessions and recent collections from the native range in northern and central Mexico into the publicly available germplasm base. Field-grown accessions will be phenotyped non-destructively for natural rubber content using near-infrared spectroscopy, a high-throughput approach recently adapted to guayule. Whole genome skim sequencing will assess population structure across new and existing USDA guayule germplasm and identify loci associated with natural rubber accumulation and agronomic traits of interest. These activities address genetic diversity constraints and past limitations in genomic resources and rapid phenotyping that have hindered guayule breeding programs, positioning guayule as a viable domestic alternative natural rubber source to reduce reliance on clonally propagated Hevea brasiliensis grown in deforested tropical Southeast Asia. The award is a Project Grant with performance at Ithaca, New York, running through August 31, 2029.
