The College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science at Michigan Technological University will conduct multiple research initiatives...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded $224,204 to the Regents of the University of Michigan on January 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), CFDA 10.310, to characterize the rhizosphere microbiome of legumes and determine how microbiome composition and function influence legume productivity and nitrogen fixation following auxinic herbicide drift exposure. The research uses genomics techniques to examine the rhizosphere...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Regents of the University of Michigan $741,354 on October 1, 2025, under the Cooperative Forestry Research program (CFDA 10.202). The award funds research to determine how soil carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus stocks have changed following forest-to-cropland conversion in the Western Lake Erie Basin, and to estimate soil organic carbon sequestration and nutrient retention potential from reforestation in the...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Oregon State University $649,977 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on September 15, 2026, for a project grant to identify genetic mechanisms controlling water conservation in black cottonwood trees. Oregon State University will conduct research using advanced genetic tools and plant measurement techniques to discover how specific genes regulate water loss in Populus trichocarpa. The...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Michigan State University $649,998 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on February 15, 2026. The award funds research on the OSRSK1 protein in rice roots, which enables the plant to grow and develop root systems in phosphorus-deficient soils. The project investigates three research questions: how OSRSK1 is activated and deactivated in response to low phosphorus availability, how the plant...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Michigan State University $649,980 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on February 1, 2026, to identify production conditions that maximize controlled environment strawberry production profitability and to identify high-yielding strawberry genotypes with enhanced resilience to high temperatures. The project runs through January 31, 2029, and is performed at Michigan State University in East...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded $648,830 to Michigan State University on September 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) Project Grant program (CFDA 10.310) to identify genetic markers and candidate genes conferring heat and salinity tolerance in strawberries, create DNA diagnostic markers for rapid trait transfer into commercial cultivars, and deposit stress-tolerant strawberry breeding lines into the National USDA...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Michigan State University $2.94 million on September 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to conduct field monitoring, stream measurements, computer modeling, and advanced data analysis to understand water, sediment, and nutrient movement in agricultural watersheds. The project combines monitoring of water flow and nutrient losses from farm fields and streams,...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Michigan State University $741,576 under the Cooperative Forestry Research program (CFDA 10.202) on October 1, 2025. MSU AgBioResearch will conduct applied research to increase farmers' success in protecting the environment and advancing agriculture, including research on plant selection for desirable traits and methods to combat diseases and parasites. The work includes developing integrated crop and soil...
The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Michigan Technological University $649,980 on September 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) Foundational and Applied Science Program to investigate the genetic mechanisms that regulate bud-break timing in poplar trees. The project will identify genes controlled by three previously discovered regulatory genes, determine how they coordinate bud-break, and establish the biological pathways responsible for the seasonal transition from dormancy to growth resumption. The work will develop and evaluate new genetic approaches for modifying bud-break timing through naturally occurring temperature-responsive regulatory elements, testing candidate genes and engineered regulatory systems under both controlled environmental conditions and replicated field trials to assess effects on bud-break timing, growth, and overall plant performance. Expected outcomes include a better understanding of molecular mechanisms controlling seasonal growth in perennial trees, identification of new genes involved in bud-break regulation, development of innovative genetic tools for modifying bud phenology, and generation of genomic and transgenic resources for the research community. The project will also provide interdisciplinary training for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in molecular biology and functional genomics. Performance occurs at Houghton, Michigan, with a period of performance from September 15, 2026, through September 14, 2030. The assistance type is a Project Grant.
