Will maintain and update the public website created for the first and second Value-added Grains projects at https://eorganic.info/valueaddedgrains. This website, along with the eOrganic YouTube channel, archives publications, fact sheets, reports, conference presentations, videos and webinars from the project produced by project team members. eOrganic will also facilitate 2 webinars and publish 2 publicly available articles on the eOrganic website per project year on research findings: production, disease management, seed treatment, variety releases, marketing, or institutional use of grains. We will also publish project events and outreach materials in the eOrganic newsletter which reaches over 12,000 stakeholders with an active interest in organic agriculture. eOrganic will evaluate the webinars for quality, utility and impact. Will lead the marketing and public outreach effort for this project. Lane will (1) develop marketing materials, including a grains zine, to be used by farmers, millers, chefs, bakers, institutional users and other stakeholders; (2) design overall project branding; (3) identify and facilitate stakeholder relationships; (4) create collaborations with food and farming community organizations to further promote the project; (5) communicate with journalists to get grains articles and recipes into popular media; (6) lead social media campaign focused on project grains; (7) facilitate Grains Exploration Boxes program; (8) organize three large public Variety Showcase events to raise awareness and facilitate stakeholder networking. Objective 1: Evaluate germplasm and develop new varieties of small grain crops with potentially high market value including food quality wheat, emmer, spelt, einkorn, rye and naked oats for adaptability to organic systems and for desirable grain, processing and culinary characteristics and nutritional quality. Objective 2: Optimize grain quality by synthesizing and sharing best management practices for seed production, disease control, planting, harvest, cleaning, and storage, that are cost-effective and appropriate for organic production. Objective 2.1 - Enhancing Winter Grain Survival Outreach plan The project will take two interacting approaches to outreach: We will 1) facilitate "active" events in which participants learn by doing, seeing for themselves, or help to generate useful information and 2) provide stakeholders with printed and real-time and recorded web-based information through eOrganic and our project partners' websites. 1. On-farm variety trials: We will conduct four on-farm spring grain trials (naked barley, naked oats, emmer, and spring wheat) at Charlie Johson's farm in Madison, SD for four years. 2. Grain quality analysis of naked oat samples: To provide information to farmers on grain characteristics of the different varieties, in addition to test weight, thousand kernel weight, seed size (length, width, and area), groat percent/percentage of hulled seed, and NIR protein, beta-glucan, and oil content will be determined. 3. Rancidity evaluations: Mechanical damage can cause an activation of the enzymes responsible for the degradation of the oil. We will split each sample (samples from 12 genotypes) in half: one half of the grain sample will be run through the dehuller, the other half will be stored in the same condition but without being ran through the dehuller. After one year of storage, peroxide value will be determined on the 'non processed' and 'dehulled' samples for all the genotypes. This experiment will be repeated with grains from three growing seasons in Madison, SD. 4. On-farm field day: A field day is organized every year at Charlie Johnson's farm in Madison through Marbleseed and NPSAS. 5. Release of a naked oat variety: Data collected as part of the previous grant and through SDSU oat breeding program will be compiled and summarized for cultivar release. We will work with Cornell University to increase seed, present at least one variety for release, and submit a PVP application after release. South Dakota State University

1. Evaluate germplasm and develop new varieties of small grain crops with high market value including food quality wheat, emmer, spelt, einkorn, naked barley, rye and naked oats for adaptability to organic systems and for desirable grain, processing, culinary characteristics and nutritional quality. 2. Address two critical production issues for organic value-added grains: winter survival and disease-free seeds. 3. Assess and increase opportunities for local and regional organic grain market demand, aggregation, and distribution. 4. Develop a comprehensive outreach program that connects key stakeholders in organic grains supply systems to each other and with the resources they need. Role in this project is to lead the project research and outreach activities in Maine. This includes variety trials for winter grains (hard wheat, soft wheat, naked barley, spelt, triticale, and rye) and spring grains (hard wheat, naked barley, oat, emmer, and spelt) in years 1-4, a winter survival survey project following 8-10 fields of winter wheat or rye per year in years 1-4, research station trials on winter survival in years 2-4, farm coaching and learning circles with 6-8 farmers per year in years 1-4 including on-farm trials in years, and other outreach including research reports, field days, and webinars in years 1-4.
