THE WORLD FACES RECORD HOT TEMPERATURES, MALNUTRITION IN THE FORM OF UNDERNOURISHMENT AND POOR DIET, AND STEADILY CLIMBING FOOD PRICES. APPLIED ECONOMISTS HAVE AN IMPORTANT ROLE TO PLAY IN ADDRESSING THESE AND OTHER PRESSING GLOBAL CHALLENGES THROUGH INNOVATIVE AND IMPACTFUL SCHOLARSHIP. ENSURING THAT EARLY CAREER APPLIED ECONOMISTS HAVE THE PREPARATION AND SKILLS TO TAKE ON THIS WORK, HAVE THE CONFIDENCE TO DO SO, AND FEEL SATISFIED DOING THIS WORK, IS PARAMOUNT. CONCURRENTLY WITH THESE GLOBAL CHALLENGES, HOWEVER, THE ECONOMICS PROFESSION IS FACING ITS OWN CHALLENGES WITH CONTINUED CONCERNS THAT ECONOMICS REMAINS INACCESSIBLE TO HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS. THESE CHALLENGES IN THE PROFESSION MAY MAKE GRADUATE STUDENTS LESS LIKELY TO PURSUE CAREERS IN APPLIED ECONOMICS, HURTING OUR CHANCES TO CONTRIBUTE MEANINGFULLY AS A PROFESSION TO ADDRESS THE ISSUES NOTED ABOVE. MENTORSHIP IS A VALUABLE TOOL FOR EARLY CAREER ECONOMISTS. MENTORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES ARE KEY TO DIVERSIFYING THE FIELD OF AGRICULTURAL AND APPLIED ECONOMICS, AND BROADENING OUR SET OF PERSPECTIVES AND APPROACHES IS HUGELY IMPORTANT TO MAINTAIN RELEVANCE AND HIGH RESEARCH QUALITY.IN THIS PROJECT, WE WILL PLAN AND CARRY OUT A THREE-DAY WORKSHOP FOR EARLY CAREER AGRICULTURAL AND APPLIED ECONOMISTS ON THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, DAVIS CAMPUS ON DECEMBER 13-15, 2024. SUPPORTED BY AN ORGANIZING COMMITTEE OF HIGHLY EXPERIENCED AGRICULTURAL APPLIED ECONOMISTS, THIS WORKSHOP WILL CONTINUE THE AGRICULTURAL AND APPLIED ECONOMICS ASSOCIATION'S (AAEA) LONG TRADITION OF SUPPORTING SUCCESSIVE GENERATIONS OF AGRICULTURAL AND APPLIED ECONOMICS SCHOLARS TO CONDUCT PRODUCTIVE AND IMPACTFUL RESEARCH. THE WORKSHOP DESIGN WILL BE INFORMED BY AAEA MEMBERS' WANTS AND NEEDS, GATHERED THROUGH A RECENT FOCUS GROUP, AS WELL AS BY RECENT RESEARCH ON BEST PRACTICES IN APPLIED ECONOMICS AND MENTORSHIP. THIS WORKSHOP WILL HELP OUR EARLY CAREER AAEA MEMBERS THRIVE SO THEY MAY DEVELOP VALUABLE AND IMPACTFUL AGRICULTURAL AND APPLIED ECONOMICS RESEARCH AND PROVIDE STUDENTS AND RELEVANT STAKEHOLDERS WITH ECONOMIC TRAINING AND EVIDENCE-BASED TOOLS TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THEIR WORK AND LIVES.
