Description
Awards issued prior to january 20, 2025, were funded under previous administrations and may not reflect the priorities and policies of the current administration.** honey bees are the most significant managed pollinator vital for production of nutritious crops. Yet, both honey beesand beekeepers face massive challenges due to habitat loss, low biosecurity for contagious diseases, as well as decreasing number of beekeepers. Additionally, there are only a handful of beekeeping programs established within the higher education institutions (universities, colleges, community colleges). Thus, there is a pressing need to educate k-12 and college students to support pollinators and beekeeping (particularly within urban communities) to help maintain healthy beekeeping and cutting-edge research – an invaluable component of the U.S. Agricultural economy – and thereby provide students with robust pathways to enter fanh careers. The honey (honeybee oriented nextgen entrepreneurs and youth) pathway program at the university of texas at SAN antonio (utsa) responds to these pressing issues by providing students with practical, hands-on research and professional training to prepare them for an expansive array of careers in food, agriculture, natural resources, and human sciences (fanh).
