The Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Dordt University $500,000 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program to develop beekeeping curricula and train secondary school teachers. With a project period from June 1, 2023 through January 31, 2026, Dordt University will train 12-16 teachers from Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota in beekeeping and use of apiculture in the classroom. Curricula incorporating beekeeping will be created and made available through an open online repository. Teachers will also receive long-term support through enrollment in the Great Plains Master Beekeeping Program. The goal is to innovatively engage students in the sciences and address declining pollinator populations by utilizing honeybees. The award aims to develop varied, engaging curricula utilizing apiculture to stimulate interest in Generation Z students and support regional industry representatives.
