Description

The number of graduates, especially underrepresented minorities, is declining in food and other agricultural programs. Therefore, there is a need to enhance recruiting efforts to ensure that a trained and diverse workforce that includes tribal representation is available to meet these needs. The overall goal of this project is to leverage existing relations with pawnee nation college (PNC) and oklahoma state university (OSU) to grow tribal student success in the workforce and complete a four-year degree and graduate studies at OSU. To accomplish this goal, 45 PNC students will participate in a training program of hands-on research projects, leadership and professional training, and experiential learning opportunities with on and off-campus food production facilities. The specific objectives of the proposed program are to 1) recruit 15 tribal students each year from PNC, 2) develop and implement theory and practice-based training programs at PNC to prepare scholars for successful transfer at OSU, and 3) conduct comprehensive four-week long internship for participants at OSU. A multidisciplinary team of faculty members will mentor students and prepare them for a successful transition to OSU. The project results will provide a model program to recruit and encourage tribal students to pursue higher education in agricultural sciences.
