Description
IT was established in 1930's when a group of residents from other parts of the island settled and sequestered the wetland and made poorly constructed houses with no infrastructure facilities. Actually, peninsula DE cantera is composed of sixteen different sectors: three public housing projects, a multiple housing cooperative project, seven sectors called slums and five new multiple housing projects. The main objective of the peninsula of cantera project is transforming the living conditions of the families that inhabit its different sectors through the coordinated efforts between the community, the private sector, and the government. The company for the integral development of the peninsula of cantera (cdipc, as its initials in spanish) is a quasi-public corporation created by law, act 20 of july 10, 1992, as amended, to promote the comprehensive development of the peninsula of cantera in SAN juan, as a model development plan for communities across puerto rico; enable the integration of the community, private sector, municipal government, and central government in such efforts; and ensure that the peninsula DE cantera's development is directed towards the benefit of its residents, for them to continue to enjoy in better living conditions the properties they currently occupy. Since the creation of the company, these goals have been largely accomplished through the implementation of housing projects, lighting and sewage systems; the paving of roads; the construction of schools, recreational parks, and tourist attractions; and the creation of community-based educational initiatives, such as the casa educativa. However, IT is stipulated by law that this public corporation will cease to exist on june 30, 2033, which is why there needs to be a transitional process in which the consejo vecinal assumes the leadership of the peninsula of cantera project and all of its activities. For this reason, the company must pursue additional funds that support new socio-economic projects that per due the corporation's closure and are inherited by the consejo vecinal. The proposed vista project aligns with the capacity building focus area, having an indirect impact on others two focus area: the economic opportunities and community empowerment. The vista project will seek to promote the development of leadership skills in the leaders of the consejo vecinal, develop instruments for the collection and analysis of data, identify external sources that attract resources to the socio-economic development program of peninsula of cantera and expects an indirectly benefit to 9,412 residents of peninsula of cantera. Three (3) vista members will contribute to the goals of the project by performing activities such as the creation of an instrument for the collection and analysis of data that reinforces the identification and request of external funds and grant opportunities, they will investigate the general theory, practice, and impact of current and future socio-economic development projects implemented in peninsula of cantera. In addition, they will identify socio-economic indicators that will be used to inform and evaluate decision-making that influences the peninsula of cantera's residents, and recommend how those indicators should be used to identify priorities and design future projects. Finally, with the help of the vistas, the economic development initiatives committee will identify and submit additional local, federal, and private sources of founding to support community work for over the course of 3 years.
