Description

The senior citizens council of greater augusta and the CSRA, georgia, INC., (the SCC) is a private not-profit, community-based, 501 (C) (3) organization serving the 13-county central savannah river area (CSRA), in georgia. The mission of the SCC is two-fold?to provide a diversity of services to senior adults and to enable them to apply their experience as a resource for meeting identifiable community needs. The SCC has been a leading provider of aging services since 1968 and has sponsored FGP since 1985. The SCC is requesting $333,938 from cncs to mobilize an estimated 97 unduplicated FGP volunteers. We have applied for approximately $94,000 in non-federal funds from augusta-richmond county and the united way of the CSRA to augment cncs funding. Although cncs required that a minimum of 56 unduplicated FGP volunteers serve in outcome based assignments, we anticipate at least 90 will serve in the strategic focus area of education in school readiness and K-12 success in burke, columbia, jefferson, and richmond counties. As these assignments are typically 9-months, over-enrolling to meet the goal will be necessary. Additional non-duplicated volunteers will be placed at the family Y child development center and at hope house. Duplicated volunteers placed in other community priorities under SC1 outputs only, will serve during school breaks at mach academy, the CSRA community initiative, and the family Y ? North jefferson. Based on test scores at the beginning of the assignment and teacher observation, students who are identified as lacking age-appropriate social skills and the maturity to enable them to become successful learners, students that are at risk of retention because they lag behind their peers in grade level skills, non-traditional high school students working toward a GED or a high school diploma, and special education students will benefit from person to person supportive assistance throughout the school year. Service activities designed to meet the ED23A, ED5A, and H15A outcomes will focus on meeting academic and social needs of the assigned students and may include assistance with vocabulary and oral and written language expression, reading comprehension, mathematics, and modeling positive behavior. Working with the boards of education in columbia, jefferson, and richmond counties, communities in schools ? Burke county, youth challenge academy, and the CSRA head start program, this project will document the total number of students served by FGP volunteers during the school year and report station-provided post-test outcomes on student progress at the end of the reporting period as required by cncs.
