AN ESTIMATED 74 FGP VOLUNTEERS WILL SERVE. OF THIS NUMBER, 74 FOSTER GRANDPARENTS WILL BE PLACED IN OUTCOME ASSIGNMENTS. SOME OF THEIR ACTIVITIES WILL INCLUDE IMPLEMENTING TWICE-WEEKLY "JUMPSTART SESSIONS" OVER THE COURSE OF THE SCHOOL YEAR ON TEAMS IN PARTNER CLASSROOMS AND PROVIDING INDIVIDUAL CLASSROOM SERVICE HOURS. BOTH ACTIVITIES WILL INCREASE THE KINDERGARTEN READINESS OF 249 PRESCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN ANNUALLY FROM LOW-INCOME COMMUNITIES IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY USING JUMPSTART'S CURRICULUM DESIGNED TO IMPROVE KEY LANGUAGE, LITERACY, AND SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL SKILLS. THE PRIMARY FOCUS AREA OF THIS PROJECT IS EDUCATION. AT THE END OF THE THREE-YEAR GRANT, 249 CHILDREN WILL HAVE BEEN SERVED BY THE PROGRAM EACH YEAR AND 137 PARTICIPATING CHILDREN WILL DEMONSTRATE GAINS IN SCHOOL READINESS SKILLS ANNUALLY. THE CNCS FEDERAL INVESTMENT OF $385,999 WILL BE SUPPLEMENTED BY $149,018.
