Description

Our history is intertwined with the evolution of baltimore from a major port city to a thriving metropolis with pockets of poverty and great need. Over the course of the last 170 years, our history is rich with examples of timely response to changing and emerging needs as a key contributor to the development of the social supports necessary for a community to thrive. Our mission is to transform the lives of children and adults by providing opportunities to build self-confidence, resilience and hope. The mission of our senior services division is to enhance the quality of life for older and impaired individuals and their caregivers through high quality supportive services. The division includes the foster grandparent program (FGP), medical adult day care and senior housing. Our FGP is an integral part of our senior services division; an estimated 69 foster grandparent volunteers will serve in this program over the course of one year. Out of the 69 volunteers, 63 volunteers will be placed in assignments within the primary focus area of education, specifically early-childhood and elementary education. Family and children's services will be measuring outcomes in the number of children who demonstrate gains in social and/or emotional development with the addition of the volunteer in the classroom. The volunteers will be assisting in early head start, head start and preschool classrooms completing a variety of task such as self-esteem building, greetings and departures, cognitive-learning, and fine motor skills. In elementary schools, the volunteers will be tutoring children in an effort to improve school attendance. Another 6 additional volunteers will be in assignments that promote child safety, welfare and health by supporting young mothers in 2 site locations. The first site is the harry and jeanette weinberg building at sage center. At the sage center our volunteers will be helping young mothers as they actively work toward reunification. The second site is the BON secours family support center. BON secours family support center allows the FGP volunteers to assist with parenting classes, life skills training, and child care.
