THE FGP IN SOCORRO COUNTY IS A LONG-STANDING PROGRAM THAT FOCUSES ON PLACING VOLUNTEERS IN OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN ORDER TO HELP STRUGGLING STUDENTS SUCCEED IN SCHOOL. IT IS OUR COMMITMENT TO ENGAGE LOCAL SENIORS AND TO ENCOURAGE THE DEVELOPMENT OF MENTORING RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SENIORS AND OUR YOUTH. AN ESTIMATED SEVEN FGP VOLUNTEERS WILL SERVE IN OUR PROGRAM, AND SOME OF THEIR ACTIVITIES WILL INCLUDE PROVIDING READING ASSISTANCE TO YOUNGSTERS ENROLLED IN THE LOCAL PUBLIC SCHOOLS. VOLUNTEERS PROVIDE EMOTIONAL SUPPORT AND A STABLE, LOVING PRESENCE FOR CHILDREN WITH LEARNING CHALLENGES; MANY OF THESE STUDENTS ARE CONSIDERED ON THE FRINGE FOR ADDICTIONS SUCH AS DRUG AND DOMESTIC ABUSE. OUR VOLUNTEERS IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF YOUNGSTERS AND TEENAGERS WHO REQUIRE THE LOVE, PERSONAL CARE AND ATTENTION WHICH AN ELDER CAN SO EFFECTIVELY PROVIDE. THE PRIMARY FOCUS AREA OF THIS PROJECT IS SOCORRO COUNTY. THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR OF OUR THREE-YEAR GRANT, AND THERE ARE NO FEDERAL DOLLARS SUPPLEMENTING THIS PROJECT.
