AARP FOUNDATION EXPERIENCE CORPS (EC) IS AN INTERGENERATIONAL PROGRAM THAT MATCHES ADULT TUTORS TO CHILDREN IN GRADES K-3 WHO NEED ASSISTANCE IN ACQUIRING BASIC LITERACY SKILLS. GREATER CLEVELAND VOLUNTEERS HAS HOSTED AND MANAGED THE PROGRAM SINCE 1997. THE PROGRAM CURRENTLY SERVES THE CLEVELAND METROPOLITAN SCHOOL DISTRICT AND THE EUCLID CITY SCHOOLS. OUR WELL-TRAINED, MOTIVATED TUTORS PROVIDE ONE-ON-ONE ASSISTANCE TO THOSE STUDENTS WHO MOST NEED IT, HELPING THEM ACQUIRE THE CORE READING SKILLS THAT WILL REMAIN WITH THEM THROUGHOUT THEIR SCHOOL YEARS. THROUGH THIS SENIOR DEMONSTRATION PROJECT, MONETARY INCENTIVES OF $5 PER HOUR ARE OFFERED TO TUTORS THAT PROVIDE AT LEAST 6 HOURS A WEEK TO THE PROGRAM. MONETARY INCENTIVES OF $6 AN HOUR ARE OFFERED TO A FEW VOLUNTEERS WHO SERVE AS TEAM LEADERS AND ASSIST IN MANAGING THE PROGRAM IN THE SCHOOLS. MANY PARTICIPANTS USE THE MONEY TO DEFRAY THEIR TRANSPORTATION COSTS TO AND FROM SCHOOL. THESE MODEST PAYMENTS PROVIDE AN INCENTIVE TO JOIN AND REMAIN WITH EC. OUR ABILITY TO OFFER THESE INCENTIVES IS VERY IMPORTANT TO THE PROGRAM'S CONTINUED SUCCESS.
