THE SCP IN SOCORRO COUNTY IS A LONG-STANDING PROGRAM THAT FOCUSES ON PLACING VOLUNTEERS WHO CAN PROVIDE SUPPORTIVE SERVICES TO ELDERLY ADULTS WITH PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL OR MENTAL HEALTH LIMITATIONS, IN AN EFFORT TO ACHIEVE AND MAINTAIN THEIR HIGHEST LEVEL OF INDEPENDENT LIVING. THE SOCORRO SCP PROGRAM HAS A DUAL PURPOSE: FIRST, TO ENGAGE IN VOLUNTEER SERVICE PERSONS AGED 55 YEARS AND OLDER, PARTICULARLY THOSE WITH LIMITED INCOME; SECOND, TO MEET CRITICAL COMMUNITY NEEDS AND TO PROVIDE A HIGH-QUALITY EXPERIENCE THAT WILL ENRICH THE LIVES OF THE VOLUNTEERS AND THOSE THEY SERVE. AN ESTIMATED SEVEN SCP VOLUNTEERS WILL SERVE IN OUR PROGRAM, AND SOME OF THEIR ACTIVITIES INCLUDE ASSISTING HOME BOUND CLIENTS WITH CHORES, LIGHT HOUSEKEEPING, PAYING BILLS, GROCERY SHOPPING, AND TRANSPORTATION TO MEDICAL AND OTHER APPOINTMENTS. VOLUNTEERS PROVIDE EMOTIONAL SUPPORT AND A STABLE, LOVING PRESENCE FOR SENIORS WITH LEARNING CHALLENGES. OUR VOLUNTEERS IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF FELLOW SENIORS WHO REQUIRE THE LOVE, PERSONAL CARE AND ATTENTION WHICH AN ELDER CAN SO EFFECTIVELY PROVIDE. THE PRIMARY FOCUS AREA OF THIS PROJECT IS SOCORRO COUNTY. THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR OF OUR MULTI-YEAR GRANT, AND THERE ARE NO FEDERAL DOLLARS SUPPLEMENTING THIS PROJECT.
