Description
The area agency on aging, region one in phoenix, arizona is a non-profit organization with a mission to advocate, develop, and deliver essential services to enhance the quality of life for older adults, adults age 18 and over with disabilities and long-term care needs, people with HIV/aids, and caregivers. Two americorps vista members have been assigned to two area agencies on aging in arizona to build the capacity of the rxmatters program, which uses americorps members to educate low-income and homebound older adults on healthy use of prescription medication with emphasis on opioids. One vista member will serve in maricopa county at region one in maricopa county, and one at the pinal-gila council for senior citizens, our sub site in pinal county. The vista members assist in building capacity of the rxmatters program by recruiting (and training volunteers), identifying and meeting with community partners to build referrals of homebound individuals at risk for medication/opioid misuse by collecting data for project evaluation efforts. The long-term goal of the project is to educate 3,000 homebound older adults using the rxmatters program curriculum across all four counties over a three-year period.
