About this award

The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians received a $443,800 Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance through the Children's Justice Act (CJA) Partnerships for Indian Communities program (CFDA 16.583). The purpose of this three-year grant, effective October 1, 2024, is to improve the investigation, prosecution, and handling of child abuse cases, especially child sexual abuse, within the tribal court system. Key objectives include: 1) increasing the number of children who receive culturally sensitive and holistic representation through a Guardian Ad Litem (GAL) program in tribal court proceedings; 2) supporting training for staff, advisory board members, and law enforcement officers; 3) creating partnerships among GAL programs and youth/family service and community organizations; and 4) monitoring and evaluating program goals to measure effectiveness. This grant funding will enable the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians to provide enhanced advocacy and trauma-informed, comprehensive services for abused and neglected children residing on the Turtle Mountain Reservation.

Description
