About this award
This $1,275,000 Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Justice's Congressionally Recommended Awards program (CFDA 16.753) will fund a comprehensive post-discharge care program for patients who have experienced violence-related injuries. The University of Maryland Medical System Corporation (UMMSC) will establish the Ambulatory Shock Trauma Outpatient Pavilion (STOP) to provide these services, which include wound care, non-narcotic pain management, peer recovery coaching, mental health treatment, social services, legal support, and case management. The goal is to increase access to trauma-informed, culturally responsive care for victims of violent crime and reduce violence-related injury recidivism through enhanced community connections and resources. The award period is from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2026.
Description
These services will occur in our ambulatory shock trauma outpatient pavilion (STOP). Embedding these services within the STOP, we aim to increase access to care for those patients with violence related injury. At the time of discharge from the trauma center, victims of violent crime will be given clinically appropriate wound care supplies, a proactive multimodal non-narcotic pain management plan and confirmed STOP follow up appointments with the clinic. The clinic will provide a trauma informed and culturally responsive space for those suffering the physical and emotional damages associated with their injuries. Patients will receive culturally responsive clinical care anchored in the principles of healing and recovery. This clinical care includes bullectomy services, peer recovery coaching, mental health assessment and treatment, social services, legal support, pain management, and case management. The care and space will be anchored in the principles of healing and recovery. Additionally, we will optimize community connections and resources, through our violence prevention program, to reduce violence related injury recidivism.
