Description

Proposes implementation of the community violence intervention program. The purpose is to lower the risk of violent crimes perpetrated by and inflicted upon youth aged 13-24. High-risk youth are defined as those who have a history of violent crime or have been impacted by the justice system. Highest-risk youth may also include those from gang-affiliated families, or with group violence history. Additionally, those experiencing substance use disorder, housing instability, and maladaptive coping behaviors will also be given special consideration when combined with a history of violent victimization or perpetration. The project service area is central east oakland, surrounding trybes headquarters in SAN antonio park, one of oaklands highest population density ZIP codes, and the most violent oakland police beat with high rates of human and narcotics trafficking, homicide, and violent assaults. Project activities will build upon currently implemented strategies of relationship building, youth internships, transitional employment, and case management in a trauma-informed environment. Expected outcomes include building and maintaining close relationships with individuals at the highest risk of committing or experiencing violent crimes; participating in and sponsoring community events to build relationships; reducing youth involvement in violent crime as victims and perpetrators, providing mentor and peer relationships to heal from trauma, and providing employment programs to establish long-term goals while addressing barriers to healing. Input from a team of community stakeholders will be used to refine and adjust programming to meet community needs through the development of a violence reduction strategic plan. Successful completion of the program each year will include 20 youth interns and 20 residents, completing 300 programming hours per individual, with all enrolled program participants identified as the highest risk of engaging in or becoming victims of violence, resulting in an overall increase in community safety.
