Description

The goal of this project is to prevent and reduce violent crime in toledo, ohio by developing an integrated, community-driven, evidence-informed ecosystem of community-based violence intervention and prevention (cvip) practice. Building on existing needs assessments, this project will conduct an in-depth asset and capacity analysis of toledos cvip landscape to identify and map gaps between high-risk populations and current cvip CBO capacity, and determine appropriate evidence-based models to address the identified GAP. The enhanced needs assessment will be conducted in collaboration between the community action table (CAT), a multidisciplinary stakeholder working group, and the research partner at bowling green state university. The findings of this assessment will be synthesized with an analysis of spatial, temporal, demographic, and group-based patterns of gun violence led by a violence reduction council (VRC); together, the enhanced needs assessment and the vrcs review will inform the enhancement of the existing violence reduction strategic plan (vrsp). To implement vrsp capacity-building recommendations, this project will provide training, technical assistance, and competitive subgrant and microgrant programs for individual and CBO cvip practitioners. Expected outcomes include the enhancement of an existing multidisciplinary cvip working group, the enhancement of vrsp, and an increase in local CBO cvip capacity, all of which are expected to result in increased provision of evidence-based violence intervention and prevention services to high-risk populations. This project primarily serves black males from ages 14 to 29 in four toledo neighborhoods with high rates of gun violence. Criteria used to identify risk factors include past incidents of gun violence in proximity to the home; online and interpersonal social networks; past victimization; and proximity to blight and disrepair; further identification of individualized risk factors will be one part of this projects analysis.
