The Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Services (BHS) was awarded a $1,600,000 Project Grant from the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) under the Comprehensive Opioid, Stimulant, and Other Substance Use Program (CFDA 16.838) to address health inequities among individuals with opioid and/or stimulant use disorder in Milwaukee's Black and Brown communities. The key products and services to be delivered through this 3-year grant include:

  1. Expanding evidence-informed post-overdose outreach programs by providing social work support to community members following fatal and non-fatal overdoses through the addition of a social worker to the Milwaukee County Office of Emergency Management's Community Paramedic Non-Fatal Overdose Team and a bilingual social worker to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office Fatal Overdose Outreach Team.

  2. Enhancing the Overdose Public Health and Safety Team (OD-PHAST) infrastructure, the multidisciplinary coordinating body focused on addressing opioid, stimulant, and other substance use issues, by refining the recommendation implementation process and establishing an OD-PHAST governing committee.

The grant aims to increase deflection and diversion programs, collaborations and prevention programming across disciplines, and data-driven strategies implemented in historically underserved Milwaukee communities.
