The U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance awarded a $998,790 STOP School Violence (CFDA 16.839) Project Grant to the Rapid City Area School District 51-4 to enhance school safety and create a supportive school climate through evidence-based solutions and a trauma-informed approach. The three-year project, starting on October 1, 2024, will support the hiring of two Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) coordinators and two social workers to lead initiatives to address students' mental health needs, provide professional development for school staff, and train local police officers. Key activities include implementing a district-wide MTSS program, integrating a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) system, delivering Mental Health First Aid training, and providing extensive training for School Resource Officers. The project aims to increase knowledge and awareness of mental health and trauma-informed practices, reduce referrals to outside agencies by 10%, and improve overall school climate and safety.
