The Stratford Board of Education received a $1,000,000 Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance under the STOP School Violence Program (CFDA 16.839). The purpose of the grant is to implement the INSPIRE (Instruct, Nurture, Support, Promote, Interest, Restore, Elevate) Students program, which aims to address three key predictors of school violence: delinquent/antisocial behavior, ADHD or ADHD-like symptoms, and childhood maltreatment. The program will start in grades 5-6 in the first year and expand to grades 7-12 in the subsequent two years. Key activities include hiring one school social worker or counselor in year one, and two additional social workers/counselors in years two and three, as well as a part-time teacher in year one expanding to full-time in years two and three. The program will utilize evidence-based strategies such as high-touch case management, trauma-informed restorative practices training for school-based teams, and support for students' cultures and languages to create a positive school climate.
