This $1,998,264 federal Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance under the Community-Based Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative (CFDA 16.045) will fund a two-year pilot program led by Portland Opportunities Industrialization Center & Rosemary Anderson High School (POIC+RAHS). The project aims to professionalize the field of violence prevention work and transform it into a viable career path with a livable wage. The "Community Safety Worker (CSW) Model" program will provide 200 hours of specialized training across four modules to 40 violence prevention staff, primarily outreach workers and credible messengers with a history of involvement in the criminal justice system, violent crime, and/or gang violence. The training will equip these individuals with skills and knowledge in trauma-informed care and community safety practices. The funding will support the second year of the pilot CSW program as well as the launch and implementation of a second cohort of 25 trainees from community-based organizations engaged in community violence intervention and prevention efforts in high-risk neighborhoods in Portland, Oregon.
