About this award
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), a division of the Colorado Department of Public Safety, received a $500,000 Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Assistance under the National Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) program. The award, effective October 1, 2023 through September 30, 2026, will support CBI's efforts to inventory unresolved homicide cases where the victim is female and a sexual component is suspected. Of the 1,354 unresolved homicide cases statewide, CBI has identified 188 that meet this criteria, with DNA profiles currently searched in CODIS for 50 cases. CBI will engage with local law enforcement agencies and district attorney offices to review the remaining evidence and determine if additional forensic testing, including investigative genetic genealogy, can be conducted to aid in these investigations. The funding will provide overtime and travel assistance to support the investigative agencies' participation.
Description
Of the more than 1,354 unresolved homicide cases statewide, we have identified 188 cases that meet this criteria. DNA profiles are currently searching in codis in 50 of those cases. We will first contact the investigating agency and the district attorneys office in each jurisdiction to advise them of this opportunity and encourage their participation. We will provide a list of cases within their jurisdiction and request they review the list for accuracy. CBI investigations will meet with members of the investigating agency, CBI forensic services, and the district attorneys office to review the remaining items of evidence to determine whether additional forensic testing can be done to include investigative genetic genealogy (IGG). With these grant funds, we can offer overtime and travel assistance to the investigating agency and/or district attorneys office directly, or we can provide the needed assistance
