THE MCDOWELL COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE HAS A FLEET OF POLICE VEHICLES THAT ARE AGING. THE SHERIFFS OFFICE RESPONDS TO ALL CALLS THAT A FULL SERVICE POLICE DEPARTMENT RESPONDS TO INCLUDING THREATS, SUCH AS TERRORISM, NATURAL DISASTERS, VIOLENT CRIME AND MASS SHOOTINGS, AS WELL AS COURT ORDERED TRANSPORTS AND CIVIL PROCESS. SOME OF THE VEHICLES IN ITS FLEET ARE APPROACHING 200,000 MILES AS WELL AS HIGH IDLING HOURS. AS THE SHERIFFS OFFICE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR RESPONDING TO ALL INCIDENTS THAT EXCEED THE CAPABILITY OF PATROL WITHIN OUR JURISDICTION, WE HEREBY REQUEST $123,000 IN FUNDING TO PURCHASE PATROL VEHICLES. THE SHERIFFS OFFICE HAS JURISDICTION THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY, A 565 SQUARE MILE COUNTY WITH A POPULATION OF 17,624 RESIDENTS. WITH THE ACQUISITION OF A NEW PATROL VEHICLES, THE SHERIFFS OFFICE WILL BE BETTER EQUIPPED TO HANDLE CALLS THROUGHOUT OUR WIDESPREAD JURISDICTION AND WILL HAVE BETTER PROTECTION TO HELP PREPARE US FOR ANY TYPE OF CALLS THAT MAY OCCUR WITHIN THE REGION. OUR DEPARTMENT WILL MAINTAIN THE VEHICLE SO THAT IT REMAINS IN A CONSTANT STATE OF OPERATIONAL READINESS AND WE WILL USE OUR OWN RESOURCES TO PROVIDE REGULAR UPKEEP SO THAT THE VEHICLE LASTS ITS EXPECTED 4 TO 6 YEARS. TO OUTFIT ONE NEW VEHICLE WITH ALL NEW EQUIPMENT COSTS $97,280.00 TOTAL PER VEHICLE WE WILL DECOMMISSION THE TWO OF THE OLDEST VEHICLES AND USE WHAT WE CAN TO TRY AND KEEP THE COSTS DOWN AND IF NOT, WE WILL SEEK FUNDING FROM OUR COUNTY COMMISSION IF IT GOES OVER THE $123,000. ONCE WE RECEIVE FUNDING THIS PROJECT SHOULD BE IMPLEMENTED WITH 3 MONTHS PROVIDED THE VEHICLES ARE IN STOCK AND READY FOR SHIPMENT ALL FUNDING WILL COMPLY WITH ALL FEDERAL AND STATE GUIDELINES AND WILL ADHERE TO THE CONDITIONS AND ASSURANCES OF THE GRANT AWARD, IF FUNDED, THE APPLICANT WILL IMPLEMENT THE PROJECT AS DESCRIBED IN THE ABOVE GRANT AWARD.
