About this award
The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), under the Department of Justice's Congressionally Recommended Awards program (CFDA 16.753), awarded a $500,000 Project Grant to Stand With Parkland, the National Association of Families for Safe Schools. The grant will fund a 3-year pilot program to deploy mobile device-based threat reporting and public safety response applications to education and public safety agencies, primarily in Florida and across the United States. The purpose is to enhance threat reporting capabilities and improve communications between education and public safety agencies before and during active assailant situations, as well as to facilitate more effective first responder coordination. The grant will cover the costs of the pilot program so that the applications are provided at no cost to the end-user agencies. Expected outcomes include improved threat reporting and first responder management through better information sharing during active incidents.
Description
We have chosen to turn our pain to purpose by adopting our mission to improve school safety. With this grant stand with parkland proposes to implement the threat reporting mobile application for local education and public safety agencies program. The purpose of our program is topilot innovative mobile device-based threat reporting and public safety response technology to education and public safety agencies located in communities, primarily in florida and secondarily in the united states, that are willing to adopt the technology. The mobile device-based applications will enhance threat reporting and augment the communications between education and public safety agencies prior to and during active assailant situations, as well as more effective first responder coordination. Project activities include working with select vendors to deploy multi-year pilot programs for mobile device-based threat reporting and public safety response applications, measuring adoption rates for the mobile applications, and gathering information on the use of the applications. Stand with parkland will scout and identify areas where this pilot program could be effective. The vendors will then conduct assessments, implementation, training and support for the applications. Expected outcomes include improved threat reporting and first responder coordination through better communication between education and public safety agencies. The threat reporting application gives students in schools, typically the first to recognize a threat, the ability to report the threat to people trained to handle the threat. The emergency response application gives the command center a visual view of an active situation including the locations of law enforcement personnel, fire rescue personnel, victims and potentially the shooter in real time during the active assailant situation. This allows the command center to better manage, control and respond to the situation. The grant will pay for 3-year pilot programs after which we anticipate the agencies will become self-funded long-term users of the applications. The grant will be used to fund the pilot program so that its cost-free to the end users.
