About this award

The Kashia Band of Pomo Indians of the Stewarts Point Rancheria was awarded a $144,002 Project Grant from the Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs Bureau of Justice Assistance under the VOCA Tribal Victim Services Set-Aside Program (CFDA 16.841). Through this funding, the Tribe will work with a technical assistance provider to develop a strategic plan and implement a comprehensive tribal justice system to address public safety and wellness concerns for tribal members. The Tribe currently lacks any justice system functions to respond to substance abuse, domestic violence, trespassing, theft, and other issues negatively impacting residents. Strategic planning funded by this award represents the critical first step toward establishing a new era of improved safety and wellness for the Kashia Tribal community both on and off the reservation.

Description

With this funding, the tribe's leadership will work with the DOJ-provided technical training assistance provider to create a strategic plan for developing and implementing a comprehensive tribal justice system. The tribe does not currently have any justice system functions in place to respond to and address the very significant public safety and community wellness concerns - including significant substance abuse, domestic violence, trespassing, theft and vandalism, and more - that are negatively impacting the lives of tribal members who reside at the stewarts point rancheria. The rancheria is located in a remote portion of sonoma county that causes extremely long response times for county and state public safety resources, further hampering the response to these issues. Tribal members who reside off-reservation in the surrounding counties also struggle with elevated levels of poverty, crime, and limited opportunities to access critical support services and alternatives to the criminal justice system. A new, carefully planned and implemented comprehensive tribal justice system will help kashia address the needs of its members and usher in a new ERA of improved safety and wellness for the kashia tribal community, both on and off reservation. Strategic planning represents the critical first step on this path.
