About this award

The Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women awarded the Quapaw Nation $530,195 on October 1, 2025, under the Special Domestic Violence Criminal Jurisdiction Implementation program (CFDA 16.025) to support the nation's exercise of special tribal criminal jurisdiction over domestic violence and related crimes.

Grant funds support a program coordinator who manages the project by coordinating efforts between the prosecutor office, jail administrator, project contracts, and training and travel activities. A tribal prosecutor handles prosecutions of special tribal criminal jurisdiction crimes, and a victim-witness coordinator ensures victims receive their rights and services. The award also covers long-term jail costs and medical expenses for individuals incarcerated on special tribal criminal jurisdiction crimes.

Performance runs through September 30, 2028, with work performed in Quapaw, Oklahoma. The program was designed under section 904 of the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013, as amended and expanded by section 804 of the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization, to assist tribal governments in implementing special tribal criminal jurisdiction authority. Eligible applicants are tribal governments, and financial records and supporting documents must be retained for three years from the date of submission of the final expenditure report, or longer if litigation, claims, or audits are pending.
