The tribe has partnered with the local non-profit Dove Women's Shelter to implement this comprehensive project focused on decreasing domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, sex trafficking, and stalking within the tribal community, while strengthening the tribe's capacity to respond to these violent crimes.

Description

The grants to indian tribal governments program assists tribal governments, and authorized designees of tribal governments, to 1) decrease the incidence of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, SEX trafficking, and stalking in tribal communities; 2) strengthen the capacity of tribes to exercise their sovereign authority to respond to these violent crimes; and 3) ensure that perpetrators of these violent crimes are held accountable for their criminal behavior. The LAC vieux desert band of lake superior chippewa indians is a federally recognized tribe located in gogebic, iron, and ontonagon counties in the upper peninsula of michigan. With this funding, the victim services program will: 1) train staff, including law enforcement, on trauma-informed approaches to serving victims with behavioral health challenges; 2) provide mental health counseling services to victims; and 3) provide transitional housing services.
