About this award

The Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska was awarded a $523,065 Project Grant from the Department of Justice's Office on Violence Against Women under the Violence Against Women Discretionary Grants for Indian Tribal Governments program (CFDA 16.587). The 36-month grant will enable the tribe's Cina Akidawe Peace Program to: 1) provide safety planning and advocacy for victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, sex trafficking, and stalking; 2) offer transitional housing; 3) provide resources to youth (ages 11-24) who have experienced these forms of violence; and 4) provide cultural healing opportunities for clients. The tribe has partnered with the Midwest Native Coalition for Justice and Peace to implement this comprehensive effort to decrease violence against American Indian/Alaska Native women and strengthen the tribe's capacity to respond to these crimes within its community.

Description

The grants to indian tribal governments program assists tribal governments, and authorized designees of tribal governments, to 1) decrease the incidence of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, SEX trafficking, and stalking in tribal communities; 2) strengthen the capacity of tribes to exercise their sovereign authority to respond to these violent crimes; and 3) ensure that perpetrators of these violent crimes are held accountable for their criminal behavior. The iowa tribe of kansas and nebraska is a federally recognized tribe that straddles the borders of northeast kansas and southeast nebraska. The cina akidawe peace program (caring for ones community) department, an agency of the iowa tribe of kansas and nebraska tribal government, works to address violence against american indian/alaska native women by developing protocols ensuring responses to crimes against american indian/alaska native women effectively compliment the family support services offered, providing transitional housing, and confidential advocacy services. With this funding, the cina akidawe peace program will: 1) provide safety planning and advocacy for victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, SEX trafficking, and stalking; 2) provide transitional housing; 3) offer resources to youth (ages 11 to 24 years old) who have been exposed to or experienced domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault or stalking; and 4) offer cultural healing opportunities for clients. The iowa tribe of kansas and nebraska has partnered with midwest native coalition for justice and peace, a tribal coalition, to plan this project.
