The Department of Justice Community Oriented Policing Program awarded the Virgin Islands Police Department $6.253 million on October 1, 2025, under the COPS Hiring Program (CFDA 16.068) to hire and rehire career law enforcement officers and increase community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts across the U.S. Virgin Islands. The award funds anticipated community partnerships, projects to analyze and assess public safety problems, and changes to personnel and agency management in support of community policing operations. The period of performance runs through September 30, 2030. Performance occurs throughout the U.S. Virgin Islands. The COPS Hiring Program provides five-year awards to state, local, territorial, and tribal law enforcement agencies nationwide to advance community policing and reduce crime through direct support for officer hiring.
