About this award
The Municipality of Bayamon, Puerto Rico was awarded a $240,000 Project Grant under the Public Safety Partnership and Community Policing Grants program (CFDA 16.710) by the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. The grant funding will be used to develop and implement a specialized 40-hour training program for the Bayamon Municipal Police Force, focusing on crisis intervention, de-escalation tactics, and effective responses to individuals experiencing mental health crises. The training program will commence with a comprehensive needs assessment, followed by a pilot training session for 15 officers, before being rolled out to the entire police force over six weeks. Pre- and post-training evaluations will be conducted to measure the effectiveness of the training, and an 8-hour annual follow-up course will be designed to provide continued education. This initiative aims to equip Bayamon police officers with the necessary skills to manage complex situations safely and effectively, ultimately improving community safety and well-being.
Description
The proposed training will focus on crisis intervention, DE-escalation tactics, and effective responses to individuals experiencing mental health crises. This initiative aims to equip officers with the skills necessary to manage complex situations safely and effectively, ultimately improving community safety and well-being. The project will commence with a comprehensive needs assessment of both the community and the police force. This assessment will identify specific training needs and inform the development of a tailored 40-hour training program. The training will incorporate elements of crisis response and intervention training (CRIT) and the scanning, analysis, response, and assessment (SARA) model, ensuring IT addresses local challenges effectively. A pilot training session will be conducted with a group of 15 officers, followed by thorough assessments and necessary adjustments to the program. Subsequently, the training will be rolled out to the entire police force over six weeks. Each session will include pre- and post-training evaluations to measure effectiveness. Finally, a comprehensive assessment of the training data will inform the design of an 8-hour annual follow-up course to provide continued education. By enhancing the skills of bayamon police officers, this project aims to foster safer, more effective responses to the municipality's complex and escalating challenges, ultimately contributing to a more secure and resilient community.
