About this award
The City of Anaheim Police Department was awarded a $350,000 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Justice's Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Program (CFDA 16.710) to develop and implement a 40-hour Crisis Intervention Teams (CIT) training program. This funding will enable the delivery of one CIT training class per month, with an anticipated average attendance of 20 students per class. As a result, potentially 480 law enforcement officers, support personnel, and qualifying mental health professionals are expected to receive the CIT training. The training will cover topics such as an overview of CIT, de-escalation techniques, community resources, mental health diagnoses, psychopharmacology, officer wellness, suicide, and community support. The Anaheim Police Department will utilize Counseling Team International (TCTI), a team of culturally competent mental health professionals, to deliver the training modules related to mental health, psychopharmacology, officer wellness, and suicide. This grant project aims to enhance the Anaheim Police Department's ability to respond effectively to individuals experiencing mental health crises and reduce the likelihood of violent encounters.
