The Austin Independent School District (Austin ISD) Police Department will use $301,330 in funding from the U.S. Department of Justice's Public Safety Partnership and Community Policing Grants program (CFDA 16.710) to provide Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) to 250 current and new AISD police officers, as well as officers from adjacent school districts, over a two-year period. The CIT training will equip officers with the skills to effectively respond to and de-escalate mental health crises on AISD campuses, including training on mental health diagnoses, symptoms, and techniques for engaging with individuals experiencing a mental health episode. This specialized training aims to ensure AISD's school communities are served safely by first responders who are prepared to sensitively and effectively handle mental health needs.
