The new york city police department (nypd) patrol services bureau will use FY24 microgrants funding to improve its youth leadership council (YLC)

There has been a rise in crime and victimization among young individuals in new york. The definition of youth has expanded, resulting in a decrease in the overall capacity to operate youth programs and hindering their ability to reach their full potential. The YLC program aims to tackle this issue by offering a secure environment for young people, breaking the cycle of crime and victimization. Ylcs also serve as a platform for young individuals to express their concerns and work towards comprehensive solutions to address their needs. Many of these concerns are related to crimes and public safety issues that directly impact the youth. In recent years, the nypd has witnessed young individuals taking on responsibilities such as addressing gun violence, gang activity, police practices, mental health, homelessness, public transportation crimes, graffiti, and school shootings. These issues are closely linked to public safety and are significant community concerns that require law enforcement involvement. Ultimately, this program will cultivate the future leaders of new york city and equip them to address public safety challenges.
