Description
Ferry county is the second poorest county in the state of washington with republic school district having the federal distinction as community eligibility provision (CEP) status, with 100% of students receiving free breakfast and lunch due to our high poverty percentages. The district serves a population of approximately 2000 residents. The districts 120 employees serve a student population of approximately 400 students in k-12. The school district serves as a community hub for many organizations and events to include designation as a base of emergency operations for department of natural resources (DNR) and united states forest service (USFS) during wildfire incident response. In other words, the school is the community meeting place, hosting community fitness classes, funerals, fairs, and incident response. The remoteness of the community has insulated the district from some of the challenges of larger and more urban districts, though IT also creates other challenges unique to republic. With only (4) sherrif county deputy's that serve a geographic area of almost 2300 square miles; emergency response time is often delayed or unavailable. Republic school district is asking for funding for a school security camera system and for a school resource officer. The current security system is aging. Our current cameras only record for (2) days and the system uses internet explorer. This means that many incidents are over-written and the system is not able to be accessed remotely. Additionally, the cameras sensors are failing; so much of the TME the cameras are not being activated to record. As for a school safety resource officer, the district hopes to supplement the limilted personnel the county is able to provide. A trained, on-site staff member, representing law enforcement, can greatly help reduce minor and major behavior incidents, provide safety support during times of emergencies, and act as the district's safety representative for the office of superintendent of public instructions (ospi) mandated district safety represenative. Laslty, republic school district #309 was recently involved in a swatting incident. The swatting hoax was a false report of an ongoing emergency that prompted tactical law enforcement response. The school had to go on lockdown while the situation was investigated. Having a school security officer and school security cameras would have greatly reduced the time needed to determine this was a hoax.
