Description

Bdsd is located within the village of brown deer (12,000 residents) which is directly adjacent to the city of milwaukee, wisconsin. The median household income is $58,472. Community members praise brown deers affordability and diversity as a deciding factor in their decision to locate in the village. Bdsd is one of the most diverse school districts in the state. Seventy-three percent (73%) of the students are students of color, and 58% of the students are from economically disadvantaged families. A safe learning environment for all students and staff is an essential prerequisite for achieving the districts mission: together with our families and community, we will inspire students to be passionate learners, creative thinkers and innovating leaders who enrich our world a recent site assessment of the school buildings and grounds has identified the need for safety improvements including: 1) door access: additional key FOB door entry access for all exterior doors and installation of interior exit only door alarms; 2) cameras: updating cameras that no longer provide the necessary resolution to enable clear surveillance, installation of cameras on staff/student parking lots, playground areas and identified blind spots, and updating of network video recorders (nvrs) to provide a minimum of 30 days storage at medium to high resolution; 3) communication: upgrading current radios and repeater transmitters and purchasing additional radios to enable adequate digital communication between district staff and first responders with improved audio quality, noise reduction and increased range; and 4) window film: application of safety film on glass door and window surfaces to prevent glass breakage and penetration. The school safety team recommends that district emergency response team members receive training in the basic tenets and protocols of the national incident management system (nims) as well as training to further develop and implement a well-defined reunification plan.
