Description
In 2022 there were 303 incidents of school shootings in america. This dramatic increase has expedited the need for schools to increase security measures such as increased law enforcement personnel presence, staff and student intruder training, and physical school improvements that include secure safe spaces throughout the school. Our school buildings range in age from 70 years old to 49 years old. These buildings were not designed with lockdown security in mind. While we have made enhancements over time and incorporated safety planning, training, and protocol there is an extensive need for improvements to ensure safety. Our first goal is to harden the exterior of our entrances and large windows by installing a product called the ballistic shield. The ballistic shield is made from 3MM thick specially tested aluminum and is installed over key areas of doors and windows. When fired into, the bullet minimally permeates the unique material with limited expansion causing razor sharp edges at the penetration site. IT can be decoratively engraved with our school name and/or logo to allow our building faade to be attractive and welcoming. Our next goal is to improve our notification system both within our school and with 911 dispatch. We hope to install the smartboot system, which is a one-of-a-kind system that utilizes a fully code compliant interior door barricading device, that has a spin key release mechanism so first responders can gain access to a locked down room, with a bluetooth low energy (BLE) mesh network to allow for instant communication. This system can immediately notify an entire facility and 911 dispatch when any boot is deployed to secure a classroom. This system notifies the facility of a lockdown by both an audible lockdown CUE and visual blinking red or green CUE and these cues can be initiated or suspended by the administrator tablet that resides both with the building administration and 911 dispatch. Our next goal is to improve our directional signage on both the interior and exterior of the building. We hope to install the rapid response room number placards, which are highly visible room indicators outfitted with a 3D design and reflective backing to make classrooms, restrooms, offices, fire extinguishers and other areas easy to locate even in low lighting. Lastly, we hope to have a full audit of our facilities and our safety plans in concert with local and state authorities. We think that this is tantamount to utilizing what we hope to receive through grant funding. We plan to learn how to position classroom furniture to ensure the most possible protection and keep occupants out of sight and to develop procedures for active shooter and/or lockdown that can be repeated and simplified for easy retention.
