ENHANCING SCHOOL SAFETY: A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO ADDRESSING WEAPONS INCIDENTS IN AGUA FRIA UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT ABSTRACT: THE AGUA FRIA UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS WITNESSED A TROUBLING RISE IN WEAPONS INCIDENTS ON ITS CAMPUSES SINCE THE RETURN FROM THE PANDEMIC. LAST YEAR ALONE, FOUR INCIDENTS INVOLVING WEAPONS (GUNS AND KNIVES) WERE REPORTED, EITHER FOUND ON STUDENTS OR WITHIN THEIR VEHICLES. THIS YEAR, THE NUMBER HAS INCREASED TO FIVE INCIDENTS, HIGHLIGHTING THE URGENCY OF ADDRESSING THIS ISSUE IN OUR SOCIETY WHERE SCHOOL VIOLENCE IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY PREVALENT. IN RESPONSE TO THIS CONCERNING TREND, THE AGUA FRIA UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS TAKEN A PROACTIVE APPROACH TOWARDS ENSURING THE SAFETY OF ITS STUDENTS AND STAFF. MEASURES IMPLEMENTED INCLUDE THE PURCHASE OF WEAPONS DETECTION SYSTEMS AND THE ADDITION OF SECURITY TEAM MEMBERS. RECOGNIZING THE GRAVITY OF THE SITUATION, THE DISTRICT'S NEW SUPERINTENDENT, MARK YSLAS, ESTABLISHED THE POSITION OF DIRECTOR OF SCHOOL SAFETY TO TACKLE THE RISING STUDENT VIOLENCE ON CAMPUS. AS THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND COMMUNITY CONTINUE TO GROW, IT IS IMPERATIVE TO TAKE PREEMPTIVE MEASURES TO PREVENT OUR FAMILY OF SCHOOLS FROM BECOMING A NATIONAL NEWS STORY. IN THIS GRANT PROPOSAL, THE AGUA FRIA UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT SEEKS FUNDING FROM THE COPS SCHOOL VIOLENCE PREVENTION PROGRAM. AN AMOUNT OF $315,062.25 IS REQUESTED TO ACQUIRE ADDITIONAL WEAPONS DETECTION SYSTEMS FOR ALL SCHOOLS, UPGRADE THE CURRENT COMMUNICATION SYSTEM THROUGH THE PURCHASE OF AIR COMM RADIOS AND REPEATERS, AND PROVIDE TWO NASRO TRAININGS FOR SCHOOL SAFETY PERSONNEL IN THE 23-24 ACADEMIC YEAR. THE DISTRICT IS PREPARED TO FUND 25% OF THE TOTAL COST OF $420,083.00. BY COMBINING PREEMPTIVE MEASURES, SUCH AS THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ADVANCED WEAPONS DETECTION SYSTEMS, AND FOSTERING STUDENT ENGAGEMENT THROUGH OUR "SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING" CAMPAIGN, WE BELIEVE IT IS POSSIBLE TO SECURE OUR SCHOOL CAMPUSES AND EFFECTIVELY REDUCE THE NUMBER OF WEAPONS INCIDENTS. WITH THE PROPOSED INITIATIVES, THE AGUA FRIA UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT AIMS TO CREATE A SAFER LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL ITS STUDENTS AND ENSURE THE WELL-BEING OF STAFF MEMBERS.
