Fruitvale independent school district is a very small, rural district in van zandt county, texas

We have around 400 students in k-12 grades. Over 60 percent of our students come from low socio-economic families. Our small community does not have a police department of any type. If we have a need for outside police presence we are 12 miles away from the county sheriff's office which could be disastrous during an emergency situation. We do have one licensed police officer on staff at fruitvale ISD. Due to our size and location (small tax base), we have very limited funding to ensure the safety of our students. Please consider funding this project for the safety and security of our students and staff. If we are awarded this grant, we would use the funds to add numerous safety measures. Some of these items would be panic buttons on each campus, capability to be in radio contact with the sheriffs office, door access controllers, security cameras, a dedicated server, wireless access points allowing employees to use their cellphones to call 911 if needed, police vehicles, and monthly visits with a drug/firearm DOG. We also see a great need for training for our police officer and other staff members. We are asking for funds to cover these training needs. Some of the areas we are planning training for are: raptor, psychological first aide, CPR/basic life support, behavior threat assessment, digital threat assessment, standard response protocol, civilian response to active shooter events, and sexual assault investigation. There would be additional training specific to our officer. We are currently seeking funding to add another officer and will be including that officer in the training.
