PROMOTING COMMUNICATION AND SAFETY PROTOCOLS THROUGHOUT USD 407. RUSSELL UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT 407 IS PROPOSING TO REPLACE OUTDATED INTERCOM SYSTEMS IN EACH BUILDING WITH A NEW INTERCOM SYSTEM, OUTDATED RADIOS FOR THE BUSES AND METAL DETECTOR WANDS FOR EACH SCHOOL BUILDING. THE INTERCOM SYSTEM WILL CONTAIN A DURESS BUTTON FOR TEACHERS DISCREETLY SEND A MESSAGE OF DURESS TO THE MAIN OFFICE AND FIRST RESPONDERS AND WHILE SENDING A DISCREET ACKNOWLEDGEMENT BACK TO THE TEACHERS LETTING THEM KNOW HELP IS ON THE WAY. THE ALERT WILL ALSO SEND A MAP OF THE SCHOOL AND THE POINT OF THE ALERT. THIS SYSTEM WILL HELP FIRST REPONDERS TO RESPOND TO AN ACTIVE INCIDENT IN A TIMELY MANNER. THE RADIOS IN THE SCHOOL BUSES ARE OUTDATED AND ARE NOT RELIABLE. REPLACING THE RADIOS WILL ALLOW BUS DRIVERS TO CORRESPOND BACK TO THE DISTRICT, AMONG EACH OTHER AND TO LAW ENFORCEMENT WHEN AN INCIDENT OCCURS. METAL DETECTOR WANDS WILL BE USED TO HELP KEEP STAFF AND STUDENTS SAFE, ALLOWING SCHOOL OFFICIALS TO KEEP GUNS AND WEAPONS OUT OF OUR SCHOOLS. THE GOAL OF THE PROJECT IS TO CREATE A FASTER RESPONSE TIME, ENHANCE THE SAFETY MEASURES ALREADY IN PLACE AND KEEP ALL STUDENTS, STAFF AND PUBLIC SAFE WHILE IN OUR SCHOOLS. THE SCHOOL DISTRICT WILL WORK WITH THE CITY OF RUSSELL POLICE DEPARTMENT AND RUSSELL COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT TO DEPLOY ALL EQUIPMENT AND PERFORM DRILLS USING THE NEW EQUIPMENT. THE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES WILL BE AN IMPERATIVE PARTNER OF THE WORKING SUCCESS OF THE NEW EQUIPMENT. THE EQUIPMENT WILL SERVE THE ENTIRE RUSSELL UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT 407 WHICH IS LOCATED IN RUSSELL, KANSAS. MANY STUDENTS AND TEACHERS LIVE IN THE RUSSELL COUNTY, KANSAS AND ELLIS COUNTY, KANSAS AREA.
