Description
- Purpose
- The goal of the gillespie cusd #7 svvp project is to provide a safe school climate by increasing our capacity to implement and enhance school security and safety through evidence-based strategies, equipment, and communication with law enforcement to mitigate major incidents and respond in a timely manner. The district is requesting $500,000 in federal funding and will provide a local match of $167,000 for the implementation of new security safety equipment and technology that hardens the physical security of school buildings with walk-through metal detectors for the main entry of each building, secondary classroom door locks to prevent classrooms from being breached by an intruder, bullet resistant window film for classrooms, which delays entry after gunfire by up to 7 minutes, a key card entry system that allows the district to shut down door access so staff only has access when law enforcement deems IT necessary, office transaction windows that create a passthrough window and eliminates outsiders from gaining access to offices, outdoor lighting upgrades with dusk-to dawn lights to light sidewalks that our elementary students use to get to their ride home, additional security cameras for current blind spots with additional archived video storage, a new intercom system for the elementary/middle school buildings to enable communication within the buildings as well as communication between buildings, parent reunification safety software, computer monitoring and digitized eops, bullet resistant window film, and replacement of unsecure doors and windows. All technology proposed will be integrated into the districts emergency operations plan with instructions for use during an event. Vendors will install, program, and fine-tune the equipment to ensure interoperability as well as provide training to key staff members, law enforcement personnel, and the SRO. The project outcomes include protection for schools against harm from weapons and drugs, as well as intruders, and improved communication with first responders and parents in an emergency event. Who will benefit: the project will benefit the gillespie cusd #7 school district and surrounding service community. Gillespie cusd #7 is located in the city of gillespie, in south-east macoupin county, illinois, which is part of the metro east region of the ST louis metropolitan area. The city population is 3,168 (2020 US census). The district serves students from the communities of gillespie, benld, east gilespie, hornsby, sawyerville, wilsonville, eagerville, MT. Clare, and dorchester. The project will benefit 1,140 students across three schools: gillespie high school, gillespie middle schol, and BEN-GIL elementary school.
