Description

Five campuses and one administration building house 184 classroom teachers, 24 professional support staff, 49 instructional aides, 46 auxiliary staff, and 18 administrators. The student population is 39% hispanic and 61% white. As an eligible applicant under category 2, the district proposes to implement a stop school violence grant to prevent gun violence by establishing weapons detection systems at campus entry points, providing technology use and community intervention training for law enforcement partners, and adding a school marshal at the high school whose job responsibilities include facilitating use of the technology-based screening systems at secondary school campuses and events. Robinson is a rural community located south of waco in central texas. Studies published by the department of justice indicate the number of youths exhibiting negative patterns of substance abuse, subjected to home violence, and living in a home with gun access is higher for rural residents than their suburban or urban counterparts. As a result, the rate of violent assaults in the region is significantly higher than the state or nation. Multiple victim school shootings such as the recent mass homicides in uvalde, texas have made students, families, educators, and community members fearful when they enter school facilities. Due to the size and location of the community, the city of robinson police department has limited personnel and resources. To replace the climate of fear the district has established a risd police department comprised of a police chief, one school resource officer, and fourteen school marshals. A cops stop school violence award will empower district and law enforcement partners to develop and implement three strategies to increase school safety: 1) install and implement eleven weapon detection systems to secure entry points at each campus and the administration building; 2) train law enforcement in technology use and community violence prevention interventions; (3) employ a school marshal at the high school to facilitate entry point security at secondary school campuses and events. Programs, training, and activities to support achievement of each safety strategy are aligned to local, state, and national safety standards and requirements and are designed to meet the individual needs of risd students, educators, and families as well as the needs of the community. The city of robinson police department has a longstanding and successful partnership with risd. The project partner has submitted a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to document support of the cops initiative. Attachments also include the behavioral threat assessment and safety and security audit utilized by risd. With the guidance of the texas school safety center and the bureau of justice technical assistance, we will plan, implement, and evaluate a successful school safety plan to prevent and reduce school violence including violence committed with firearms to build a safe and positive educational environment in robinson ISD.
