IT IS THE VISION OF THE ENGLISH SKILLS LEARNING CENTER (ESLC) TO BRING THE PROMISE OF INTEGRATION, SECURITY AND EMPOWERMENT TO ADULT IMMIGRANTS AND REFUGEES IN SALT LAKE COUNTY. OUR PROPOSED VISTA PROJECT ALIGNS WITH THE CNCS FOCUS AREAS OF ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY, THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF A FINANCIAL LITERACY CURRICULUM, EDUCATION, THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF A FAMILY LITERACY CURRICULUM, AND HEALTHY FUTURES, THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF A HEALTH LITERACY CURRICULUM. THE VISTA PROJECT PROPOSED WILL PROVIDE HIGH QUALITY AND CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE FAMILY, FINANCIAL, AND HEALTH LITERACY CURRICULUM TO THE LOW-INCOME ADULTS IN OUR ESL CLASSES FOR UTAH REFUGEES AND IMMIGRANTS, STRENGTHENING OUR OVERALL PROGRAMS PROVIDING ESL AND CITIZENSHIP INSTRUCTION BY DEVELOPING NEW FUNDING RESOURCES TO SUPPORT THE ESLC FOR FUTURE IMPACT IN THE REFUGEE AND IMMIGRANT COMMUNITY. THIS PROGRAM EXPECTS TO SERVE OVER 1,000 ADULT IMMIGRANTS AND REFUGEES EACH YEAR FOR THREE YEARS. WE SEEK THREE FULL-TIME VISTA MEMBERS WHO WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THESE GOALS THROUGH THEIR WORK OF RESEARCHING, DEVELOPING, AND IMPLEMENTING ESL CURRICULUM WHICH SPECIFICALLY ADDRESSES THE TOPICS OF FAMILY LITERACY AND READING, FINANCIAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT, AND LITERACY IN HEALTH CARE AND PREVENTION. THESE VISTA MEMBERS WILL ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO BUILDING THE CAPACITY OF THE ESLC FOR FUTURE SUSTAINABILITY AND IMPACT IN THE COMMUNITY OVER THE COURSE OF THE THREE YEAR PROJECT.
