The U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration (EDA) awarded a $5.5 million Project Grant under the Economic Adjustment Assistance (EAA) program to Oregon State University. The grant will support the Oregon Mass Timber Coalition led by the Port of Portland to modernize and boost Oregon's forest products industry by making it a national leader in using mass timber to accelerate affordable housing production, provide good jobs, and restore forest health. Key projects include working with rural forest-dependent communities to grow wood fiber access and facilitate a wood-based workforce development program. Resources will also be provided to university research and development programs conducting design and prototyping of new construction materials. Assistance will help state agencies create a favorable regulatory framework for modular mass timber homes in rural and wildlife-impacted areas. Once implemented, the investment is intended to develop and strengthen regional industry clusters while embracing economic equity and enhancing U.S. competitiveness globally. A $500,000 sub-award was provided to the University of Montana for the "Smart Forestry: Paving the Way from Forest Restoration to Mass Timber" project.
