About this award

The County of Pender, North Carolina received a $2.1 million project grant from the Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration under the Investments for Public Works and Economic Development Facilities program (CFDA 11.300). The funding will support construction of a permanent natural gas fueled generator at Pender County's water treatment plant and establishment of a berm around the adjoining Pender County wastewater treatment plant. This aims to mitigate impacts of significant flooding on operations of both facilities, reducing likelihood of power losses during normal and extreme flooding events while also reducing flood risk to the wastewater treatment plant site. The project is estimated to create 50 jobs, retain 30 jobs, and generate $8 million in private investment. The grant was awarded on August 26, 2021.

Description

This investment will support economic resilience through construction of a permanent natural gas fueled generator at pender county's water treatment plant, and establish a berm around the adjoining pender county wastewater treatment plant, mitigating the impact of significant flooding on the operation of both of these facilities. This project will reduce the likelihood of potential power losses in normal and extreme flooding events, and reduce the risk of flooding of the wastewater treatment plant site that could result in both damage and ceasation of plant operations, putting all jobs and businesses in the county-owned pender commerce park at risk. The grantee estimates this project will create 50 jobs, retain 30 jobs and generate private investment of $8 million. This project was made possible by the regional planning efforts led by the southeastern economic development commission.
