DESCRIPTION:THE NATIVE VILLAGE OF AKUTAN WILL CONTINUE TO ESTABLISH AN ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM. THEY WILL BUILD ADMINISTRATIVE AND PROGRAMMATIC CAPACITY FOR IMPROVED GRANT MANAGEMENT AND DAILY ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM OPERATIONS. A FOCUS AREA IS TO CONDUCT A RECYCLING EFFORT WITHIN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY, INCLUDING OUTREACH AND EDUCATION TO IMPROVE AWARENESS OF ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP. THE TRIBE WILL CONDUCT A COLLABORATIVE SOLID WASTE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT WITH THE CITY, DEVELOP A MARINE DEBRIS PROGRAM, AND INCREASE KNOWLEDGE/RESOURCES FOR HEALTHIER, MORE SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY.ACTIVITIES:WORKPLAN ACTIVITIES WILL INVOLVE ADMINISTRATIVE CONTINUED CAPACITY BUILDING AS WELL AS TRIBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CAPACITY BUILDING. THE TRIBE WILL CONTINUE CRITICAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS BY BACKHAULING WASTES WHICH PREVENTS CONTAMINATION BY UNIVERSAL WASTES INTO WATERWAYS AND ON LAND. THIS WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED THRU ACTIVITIES TO INCLUDE COMMUNITY WIDE COLLECTION OF MATERIALS THAT CAN BE RECYCLED OR REPURPOSED TO REDUCE WASTE WITHIN THE COMMUNITY, EXTEND THE LIFE OF THE LANDFILL. A MARINE DEBRIS PROJECT WILL INVOLVE ACTIVITIES TO THE DEBRIS. COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND EDUCATION ACTIVITIES ARE INTEGRAL TO THIS PROJECT.SUBRECIPIENT:NO SUBAWARDS ARE INCLUDED IN THIS ASSISTANCE AGREEMENT.OUTCOMES:AKUTAN AND THE EPA EXPECT THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM CAPACITY TO EXPAND BY ENGAGING THE TRIBAL RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY. OUTCOMES WILL INVOLVE ADMINISTRATIVE CONTINUED CAPACITY BUILDING AS WELL AS TRIBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CAPACITY BUILDING. THE TRIBAL WILL CONTINUE TO FOCUS ON OUTCOMES THAT ARE SPECIFIC TO CRITICAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS. MARINE DEBRIS ACTIVITIES WILL RESULT IN IMPROVED HEALTH AMONG TRIBAL MEMBERS THRU PROVEN STRATEGIES AND INITIATIVES. COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND EDUCATION IN SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS CHANGES BEHAVIOR PATTERNS, ENABLING BOTH EPA AND THE TRIBE TO PROTECT HUMAN HEALTH AND THE ENVIRONMENT. OVERALL, THESE EFFORTS WILL SERVE THE TRIBAL COMMUNITY FOR YEARS TO COME.
