Description

The purpose of this american rescue plan environmental justice small grant terragraphics international foundation INC is a project called one habitat - sumu'YOO t & uuml; pipp & uuml; h: an environmental education program to address environmental injustice on the shoshone-paiute duck valley indian reservation. Project activities include developing and implementing an environmental education program for 7TH-12TH grade native students including classroom workshops, field trips, field activities, scientific conferences, and community presentations. Expected outcomes include students being better prepared to understand and address local environmental challenges and an increase in students pursuing higher education and jobs in environmental science. There will be subawards for this project. Sdwa 1442: handwashing is a well-accepted approach to combating the spread of covid-19. Clean water is necessary for the proper washing of hands. Sdwa 1442 grant projects contribute to providing clean water for handwashing in combatting the spread of covid-19. Activities: project activities include four classroom workshops, two field trips, three field activities, three scientific conferences, and two community meetings. Classroom workshops (4): curriculum will be developed and delivered for 4 classroom workshops before the field trips and field activities. Workshop 1 will be led by students involved in the summer 2021 pilot beaver trapping work, describing beavers' role in a healthy riparian ecosystem. This will be paired with community meeting 1 to introduce the tribal council, school board, and other community members to the project. Workshop 2 will cover the mining history in the region, impacts of mining on riparian (and human) health, and the relationship between climate change and mineral demand. Workshop 3 will introduce students to concepts of riparian ecosystem health, including the impact of climate change on wildfires and how controlled burns can help the sagebrush ecosystem. Students will plant native seedlings as part of restoring habitat damage from the 2018 wildfire. Workshop 4 will cover salmon migration and TEK prior to visiting lower granite DAM. Field trips (2): two field trips will help students understand the interconnected nature of the efor and associated habitat as part of the larger upper snake river basin. The isolated nature of the dvir makes these activities costly (18% of budget is for OCS student travel) and simultaneously essential for student learning; students have few opportunities to experience how their environment is connected to the health of humans and wildlife regionally. Students will learn about the relationships between salmon migration, climate change, energy, and mining during visits to the fort mcdermitt reservation (field trip 1) and the lower granite DAM (field trip 2). Fort mcdermitt (a usrt sister tribe) is grappling with a proposed lithium mine at thacker pass to meet US demand for lithium-ION batteries for low-carbon technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The lower granite DAM is one of four dams proposed for removal on the snake river. The DAM trip will include two additional stops: the NEZ perce fish hatchery and UI campus. The fish hatchery is managed by the NEZ perce tribe, and is an important part of maintaining the sacred fishing traditions of the nimiipuu (NEZ perce) people. The campus visit will be supported by UI tribal relations and the native american student center. Field activities (FA) (3): students will perform environmental sampling, riparian restoration (planting), and beaver trapping/relocation. Events will focus on water quality assessment and improvement along the efor, including the dvir reservoir, streams, and private wells to introduce concepts of watersheds, hydrology, and water quality. Field activity 1 (restoration) will involve planting native plants in the fire-impacted area upstream of the reservation, near the location where beavers will
