This $500,000 Project Grant awarded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Environmental Justice Collaborative Problem-Solving (EJCPS) Cooperative Agreement Program (CFDA 66.306) will enable the International Center for Appropriate and Sustainable Technology (Icast) to plan, pilot, and evaluate a three-year program to decrease reliance on propane heating in tribal buildings through retrofits and replacement with beneficial electrification alternatives. The project will partner with four New Mexico tribes - Jemez Pueblo, Zia Pueblo, Mescalero Apache Nation, and Taos Pueblo - to conduct energy audits, install electric heat pumps and other upgrades in a minimum of 10 tribal properties, and produce a feasibility study and resource guide for broader implementation. Icast will also work with the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) Fund to provide technical assistance and educational outreach to tribal leaders and community members. Expected outcomes include reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 51 tons, improving health and safety in 8-10 buildings, and generating $435,000 in energy cost savings.
